What is Big Data?

I bet most of us have heard about the Era of Big Data, but have you realized that the heat of this subject has been fading recently?

Before explaining the reason for the receding heat, I would like to introduce what exactly is big data. Big data can be defined as a data set that is the advanced version of the traditional relational database, and the characteristics of the big data can be concluded as the 3Vs: Volume, Velocity, and Variety.

  • Volume.

Volume refers to the amount of data generated through different online applications, for example, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram.

  • Velocity.

Velocity refers to the speed of generating data, big data helps to process data faster so as to avoid bottlenecks.

  • Variety.

Variety refers to all the structured and unstructured data, for example like text, pictures, and audio, and the Big data will be able to manage and classify them into different categories.
